Here are some of the more popular questions that GameOn staff and Admin's get asked. If your question is not answered here, you can post in the LAN Party section of the GameOn message board.
I'm under 18 and want to go to a LAN, is that a problem?
Not at all, as long as your parents agree. Due to the LAN's being a minimum of 2 days, written consent from your parents is all that is needed. We are more than happy to speak to any parents that may have concerns... just contact us by posting on the LAN message board section or in the #GameOnLan IRC channel and we can arrange a phone call.
What if my PC doesn't work when I get to the LAN?
Sometimes during transit a PC's components can be sometimes nudged loose hence causing problems when setting up at the LAN. GameOn staff and often LAN attendees can lend helping hands. GameOn do not take responsibility for installing or configuring hardware other than a GameOn supplied network card. Some of the LAN regulars have many years experience in dealing with computers but advice is to be followed at the user's risk.
What's GameOn's policy with Alcohol?
GameOn do not have a problem with alcohol being consumed at the LAN's as long as it is done in a civilised fashion. GameOn are not licensed to sell alcohol so any alcoholic drinks must be bought by individuals, GameOn do NOT endorse the consumption of alcohol by attendees that are under the legal age of 18. In respect of GameOn's wish to have a safe friendly atmosphere, attendees found to be violent or abusive as a result of alcohol or supplying alcohol to under 18's will be removed from the LAN without compensation. A ban maybe imposed to prevent the individual attending any future events.
NB: GameOn to date has never had any alcohol related incidents at any of their previous LAN events.
Does GameOn allow file transferring?
GameOn only allows files to be transferred to and from the dedicated file server provided by GameOn itself. This contains all game patches, maps, add-ons and various drivers. The reason GameOn enforces such a rule is to avoid the distribution of copyrighted, pornographic and other illegal material that is commonly associated with LAN parties.
Can GameOn provide servers for private tournaments?
If you wish to arrange a private clan match or tournament between yourself and friends, providing the server resources are available (almost always) then yes GameOn can provide a server that can be used for private tournaments. Just talk to a server admin, who will be more than happy to help you out.
GameOn try not to let travel arrangements come between you and a good LAN. There are many people that attend the LAN's that travel from around the country. It is more than likely one or two will pass by your neck of the woods. Although GameOn cannot guarantee that travel arrangements can be made, it can help to try and organise something. There is a feature within the LAN booking system that will allow you to request a lift, or alternatively for people to say that they are able to offer a lift. You can also try speaking to an admin in the #GameOnLan IRC channel, or posting a message in the LAN message board section.
My friend doesn't have a PC but wishes to come along, is that a problem?
GameOn have to be quite strict with regards to visitors. The reason for this is the cost of business and personal equipment that is housed at the LAN site. GameOn understandably wish to avoid any incidents involving theft or damage to equipment caused by a third party. Also they take up space that could otherwise be used by a full paying member.
Because of these reasons, spectators are allowed to attend, but a small fee will be charged. They must book themselves a spectator's space at the LAN using the MyLan booking system.
Can I rent a PC at GameOn?
At the moment GameOn do not have the facilities for rental of equipment. Occasions have been known for attendees to bring enough parts to comprise a PC, but that is subject to individuals, and has to be arranged on a personal basis. GameOn can help in allowing requests to be posted on the GameOn LAN message board and/or the #GameOnLan IRC chat room.
Where do people sleep at the LAN's?
At the GameOn sites, various sections are available to be used as sleeping quarters. GameOn doesn't provide luxuries in that department. Comfort is something you will need to consider if you wish to attend a LAN. It is advised by GameOn regulars that purchasing an inflatable bed or lilo provides a softer alternative to wooden/carpet/concrete floors.
I have a disability, what facilities do you provide?
GameOn doesn't discriminate against race, religion or disability. Unfortunately GameOn are limited in their facilities by the locations that we hire. Simple tasks such as assistance with moving equipment are things that can be easily arranged, but facilities such as wheelchair ramps vary from site to site. If you wish to attend a LAN but are concerned we may not offer what you require, we recommend contacting us to discuss your requirements and we can inform you if it's something we can assist with.
Yes, GameOn do not have a problem with you bringing your own food.
A kitchen is open for light snacks, burgers, chips etc
Also refreshments hot & cold are available at the kitchen
